Reza Pahlavi Receives 2026 Freedom Prize in Frankfurt as Thousands of Demonstrate in Germany
Frankfurt Demonstrations Highlight Divisions and Unity Within the Iranian Diaspora
The demonstrations surrounding the November 7 ceremony illustrated both the mobilisation capacity and the political diversity of the Iranian diaspora.
While large numbers of people gathered to support Reza Pahlavi, other demonstrators expressed criticism of his political role and the decision to have him receive an award dedicated to the Iranian people.
The debate is particularly sensitive because Iranian opposition movements include monarchists, republicans, secular democrats, left-wing organisations, ethnic and regional movements, and individuals who do not identify with any established political organisation.
These groups may share criticism of the Islamic Republic while disagreeing substantially about what should replace it.
For some, the restoration of a constitutional monarchy represents a possible political solution. Others insist that Iran should become a republic.
There are also people who believe that political leadership should emerge from within Iran rather than being concentrated around prominent opposition figures living abroad.
The demonstrations in Frankfurt therefore represented more than a gathering in support of one political personality. They reflected a broader struggle over representation, political legitimacy and the future direction of the Iranian opposition.
German media reported that both supporters and critics participated in demonstrations connected to the ceremony. Police maintained a significant presence in the city, and the gatherings were largely peaceful at the time of the initial reports.
