Tehran Without the Filter: Women, Street Life and Social Change

Tehran Photography and the Reality of Iran

Photography plays a major role in shaping international perceptions of Iran.

Images of Tehran can communicate atmosphere and visual detail more effectively than statistics, but photographs must still be interpreted carefully.

A single frame captures a moment.

It does not necessarily capture the political environment, legal restrictions or personal motivations surrounding that moment.

The photographs accompanying reports about women without hijab in Tehran are therefore best understood as visual documentation of particular scenes rather than a complete representation of Iranian society.

Women in Tehran’s Public Life

Iranian women are active across many areas of public life.

Women attend universities, work in professional occupations, operate businesses, participate in cultural production and contribute to scientific and technological fields.

Iran has produced internationally recognized female filmmakers, writers, athletes, scientists and artists.

At the same time, women face legal and social restrictions that distinguish Iran from many other countries.
