Tehran Without the Filter: Women, Street Life and Social Change
Youth Culture
Tehran has one of the most dynamic youth cultures in Iran.
Young people follow international music, movies, fashion, technology and social media trends while simultaneously participating in Persian cultural traditions.
This produces a distinctive hybrid identity.
A young Tehran resident may listen to American or European music, follow international fashion accounts, use modern technology and drink specialty coffee while celebrating Nowruz and maintaining strong connections with Persian family traditions.
This combination is not contradictory.
It is characteristic of contemporary urban Iran.
Cafés as Social Spaces
Cafés have become important meeting places for Tehran’s younger generation.
They provide environments for conversation, studying, working remotely, dating, socializing and creative activities.
The café culture is especially visible in wealthier and more cosmopolitan parts of the capital.
Photographs of women sitting together in Tehran cafés therefore reveal an ordinary aspect of urban life that is often missing from traditional international representations of Iran.
The presence of women without hijab in some cafés also illustrates how social practices can differ from formal regulations.
Tehran’s Modern Lifestyle
Modern Tehran has developed an increasingly sophisticated consumer and lifestyle culture.
Shopping centers offer international-style fashion. Restaurants serve Persian, Italian, Japanese and other cuisines. Specialty coffee shops have expanded. Fitness centers, beauty salons, art galleries and design studios are part of the city’s contemporary economy.
