Tehran Without the Filter: Women, Street Life and Social Change
Tehran Fashion After Social Change
The evolution of women’s fashion in Tehran has become one of the most visible manifestations of changing social attitudes.
Traditional forms of dress remain common, but contemporary clothing has become increasingly diverse.
Long coats, loose trousers, denim, sneakers, boots, handbags and contemporary accessories can be seen alongside more traditional garments.
The styling of the headscarf has also changed.
Some women wear it loosely over their hair. Others place it around their shoulders or neck. Some appear in public without it.
These differences create a constantly changing visual landscape.
For fashion photographers and international media, Tehran women’s fashion has therefore become an increasingly important subject.
The Importance of Ordinary Images
Not every photograph from Tehran needs to document a major political event.
Sometimes an ordinary street scene can reveal important information about a society.
A group of women talking in a café, a young woman walking through a shopping area or friends sitting together in an urban restaurant can show how people actually use public space.
Such photographs are particularly valuable because they move beyond political symbolism.
They show people living their daily lives.
At the same time, images should not be overinterpreted. A photograph is evidence of a particular moment, not a statistical survey of an entire population.
