Iraqi Kurds Prepare for War With Iran: Rising Tensions on the Middle East’s Most Volatile Border
Strategic Importance of the Iran–Iraq Kurdish Border
The mountainous frontier between Iraq and Iran is one of the most strategically sensitive regions in the Middle East.
Several factors make this area critical:
Rugged Geography
The border region consists of steep mountain ranges, narrow valleys, and remote villages. This terrain provides ideal conditions for guerrilla warfare and insurgent activity.
Kurdish fighters have historically used the mountains as natural defensive strongholds.
Cross-Border Ethnic Communities
Kurdish populations live on both sides of the Iran–Iraq border. The Kurdish regions of western Iran include provinces such as:
-
Kurdistan Province
-
Kermanshah Province
-
West Azerbaijan Province
These areas have experienced periodic unrest and anti-government demonstrations over the years.
Kurdish militant groups maintain networks of supporters and sympathizers across the border.
Limited Central Government Control
While Iran maintains a strong military presence in its Kurdish provinces, the rugged terrain makes it difficult to fully control the region.
Similarly, the Iraqi central government has limited authority over certain areas of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, which is governed by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
This complex political landscape creates opportunities for militant groups to operate.
