The situation of American weapons falling into the hands of militants is not new. A 2016 Pentagon audit revealed that due to poor record-keeping and regulations, nearly half of the 1.5 million weapons provided to Iraqi and Afghan security forces since 2002 went missing, including almost 978,000 M4 and M16 rifles. Additionally, a 2014 report from the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction suggested that approximately 43 percent of the weapons provided to the ANDSF likely ended up in the possession of groups like the Taliban or ISIS. Furthermore, there have been reports of significant ammunition shortages from former Afghan government stockpiles.
