War Conflict and the Hijab: The Role of Women in Socio-Political Movements

Section 3: Women’s Activism in Iran

3.1 Historical Role of Women in Iranian Society

Women have historically been active agents of change in Iran—from constitutional movements in the early 20th century to revolutionary activism in 1979. Women participated in protests, political debates, and social reforms, often facing repression but also making significant strides.

Post-revolution, women faced restrictions under Islamic law, but many continued to advocate for their rights through underground networks, cultural activism, and social campaigns.

3.2 The Rise of Religious Women Activists

In recent years, religious women’s groups like the “Daughters of the Revolution” have emerged, using Islamic symbols like the hijab to promote patriotic and religious values. These groups organize gatherings, distribute blessed scarves from Imam Hussein’s shrine, and foster a collective sense of spiritual resilience.

Their activities emphasize the hijab not just as a religious obligation but as a symbol of national resistance, especially during times of external threats like the Iran-Israel conflict.

3.3 Grassroots Movements and Their Impact

Grassroots activism flourished amid social restrictions and external tensions. Women’s voluntary adoption of hijab, especially using blessed scarves, symbolizes spiritual defiance and cultural continuity.

Social media platforms amplify these messages, with young women sharing stories of embracing hijab and participating in patriotic acts, reinforcing the idea of resilience through faith.
