Historical Echoes: The 1980 Tehran Hostage Rescue Attempt
Discussions about a potential special forces mission inevitably evoke comparisons to Operation Eagle Claw, the failed 1980 attempt by the United States to rescue hostages from the American embassy in Tehran.
The operation involved US special forces infiltrating Iran to rescue diplomats who had been held captive since the Iranian Revolution.
However, the mission encountered severe logistical and mechanical problems in the Iranian desert.
A helicopter collision during the operation killed eight American servicemen, forcing the mission to be aborted.
The failure had major political consequences in the United States and remains one of the most studied military operations in special forces history.
