Shooting Training Session for Young Women: Air Rifle Training and the Growing Role of Women in Sport

Women’s Shooting Sports in Iran

Women’s participation in sport in Iran has developed within a distinctive social and regulatory environment. Iranian women have participated in international competitions in disciplines including shooting, archery, taekwondo, rowing, athletics and other sports.

Shooting has particular significance because Iranian women have represented the country at major international competitions. Iranian female shooters participated in the Olympic Games, including the 2016 Rio Olympics, where shooting was among the sports represented by Iranian women. Golnoush Sebghatollahi competed for Iran in shooting at Rio 2016, including the women’s 10-meter air rifle and 25-meter events.

The history of Iranian women in shooting extends back several decades. Human Rights Watch and other observers have documented that Iranian women shooters became among the first female athletes from post-revolutionary Iran to represent the country internationally.

The emergence of young female athletes in shooting training sessions is therefore part of a longer sporting history.
