Reza Pahlavi Receives 2026 Freedom Prize in Frankfurt as Thousands of Demonstrate in Germany

Former German Justice Minister Questions Pahlavi’s Representative Role

The controversy also extended beyond local Frankfurt politics.

Former German Justice Minister Herta Däubler-Gmelin questioned the foundation’s decision to have Reza Pahlavi receive the award on behalf of the Iranian people.

Her criticism focused on the potential political implications of giving an unelected opposition figure a prominent representative position at an internationally visible ceremony.

The central concern was that recognition intended for the Iranian population could be interpreted as political recognition of a particular opposition personality.

This distinction matters because Iran’s opposition movement includes individuals and organisations with substantially different political objectives.

Some support constitutional monarchy, others advocate a democratic republic, and many focus primarily on human rights, women’s rights, freedom of expression and the release of political prisoners.

The debate surrounding the award therefore became a wider discussion about political representation and the conditions necessary for democratic legitimacy.
