World Leaders Gather for United Nations General Assembly as President Masoud Pezeshkian Delivers Wartime Address

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also arrived in New York for the General Assembly.
Araghchi has played an important role in Iran’s diplomatic engagement with foreign governments and has been closely involved in negotiations surrounding Iran’s nuclear program and the current conflict.
His presence in New York was particularly important because diplomats were using the UN General Assembly as a venue for indirect communication between Iran and the United States.
Reuters reported that Araghchi communicated with U.S. envoys through intermediaries on the sidelines of the General Assembly.
The diplomatic activity demonstrates that the UN General Assembly is not only a venue for public speeches.
It is also a period during which foreign ministers, presidential advisers and diplomats conduct numerous bilateral and multilateral meetings.
For Iran and the United States, these informal and indirect contacts can be especially important because formal direct diplomatic relations between the two countries have been absent for decades.
Pezeshkian and the Future of U.S.-Iran Diplomacy
The possibility of renewed negotiations was one of the central issues surrounding Pezeshkian’s appearance.
On September 22, Trump said that discussions with Iran were continuing and expressed optimism that a settlement could eventually be reached. Reuters reported that Trump said there was significant momentum toward a possible agreement following meetings involving U.S. representatives and intermediaries.
Iran has also signaled interest in diplomacy, although Tehran has attached conditions to ending the conflict.
A senior Iranian official said Iran was prepared to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz if the United States reduced military pressure and lifted its blockade, according to Reuters.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes.
Any prolonged disruption could affect international oil markets, shipping costs and energy security.
This makes the diplomatic confrontation between Iran and the United States relevant far beyond the Middle East.
