Maryam Rajavi and NCRI Conference in Italian Parliament
Why Her Leadership Remains Debated Among Iranian Opposition Communities
The international appearance of Maryam Rajavi continues to generate discussion not only because of her criticism of Iran’s government but also because of the controversy surrounding her own political movement.
For decades, Rajavi has attempted to position the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) as the main organized alternative to the Islamic Republic. However, outside the circles of NCRI supporters, her leadership remains a subject of disagreement among many Iranian opposition activists, intellectuals, and diaspora communities.
The central question debated by critics is whether a highly organized opposition movement automatically represents the broader Iranian population.
While the NCRI argues that years of political activity, international advocacy, and organizational structure demonstrate legitimacy, critics argue that popularity among ordinary Iranians is a separate issue from international visibility.
