Maryam Rajavi and NCRI Conference in Italian Parliament

Introduction

The appearance of Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), at a conference hosted inside the Italian Parliament has renewed international attention on one of Iran’s most controversial opposition figures.

The event, titled “The Iran Crisis and the Democratic Solution for the Future,” brought together Italian lawmakers, international political figures, and supporters of Iran’s opposition movement. However, Rajavi’s presence also highlighted a long-running debate: how much support does the NCRI actually have among Iranians inside and outside the country?

While Rajavi and her supporters present the NCRI as a democratic alternative to Iran’s current government, critics argue that the organization has limited popularity among many segments of Iranian society and remains a divisive figure within the broader opposition movement.
