The One Billion Toman Kurmanji Dress of Khorasan: Why Is This Traditional Kurdish Clothing So Expensive?

The Age of the Garment Matters

Age is another major factor.

Older traditional clothing is often more difficult to replace because the original materials and techniques may no longer be readily available.

A contemporary garment can be reproduced.

An old garment cannot necessarily be reproduced authentically.

Once an old fabric has deteriorated, the exact original material may no longer exist. Once a particular artisan tradition disappears, the exact stitching technique may be difficult to recreate. Once old coins are removed from circulation, finding a large collection of appropriate coins becomes more difficult.

Age therefore interacts with rarity.

An old garment in poor condition may not necessarily be more valuable than a younger garment in excellent condition. However, an old, rare, authentic, well-preserved garment with original decorations can be particularly significant.
