Iraqi Kurds Prepare for War With Iran: Rising Tensions on the Middle East’s Most Volatile Border

The Republic of Mahabad: A Short-Lived Kurdish State

One of the most important moments in Kurdish history occurred in 1946 with the creation of the Republic of Mahabad.

This short-lived Kurdish state emerged in northwestern Iran following World War II, when Soviet forces temporarily occupied parts of northern Iran.

During this period of weakened central authority, Kurdish leaders declared an independent Kurdish republic in the city of Mahabad.

The republic was led by Qazi Muhammad, a Kurdish political leader who sought to establish a democratic Kurdish state with support from local tribes and intellectuals.

The Mahabad government introduced Kurdish language education, established political institutions, and created a small military force.

However, the republic survived for less than a year.

When Soviet forces withdrew from Iran under international pressure, Iranian government troops quickly reasserted control over the region. The republic collapsed in December 1946, and its leaders were executed.

Despite its brief existence, the Republic of Mahabad remains a powerful symbol of Kurdish aspirations for independence.
