Iraqi Kurds Prepare for War With Iran: Rising Tensions on the Middle East’s Most Volatile Border

The Early Kurdish Revolts in Iran

Kurdish resistance against centralized rule in Iran dates back to the early 20th century, particularly during the collapse of traditional imperial structures following World War I.

At that time, Kurdish tribal leaders in western Iran sought to assert independence or regional autonomy. The weakening of imperial control across the Middle East created opportunities for local leaders to challenge authority.

One of the most notable early Kurdish rebellions was led by Simko Shikak, a powerful Kurdish tribal leader who controlled significant territory in northwestern Iran during the 1910s and early 1920s.

Simko attempted to establish an autonomous Kurdish state and launched several military campaigns against Iranian government forces. Although he initially achieved some success, the central government eventually defeated his movement.

However, Simko’s rebellion helped establish a lasting tradition of Kurdish resistance in the region.
