The Islamic Republic’s Instrumental Misuse of War Ruins: Propaganda
The militarization of civilian environments further adds to this complexity. The appearance of armed individuals in residential ruins introduces a visual association between everyday life and conflict. This blurring of boundaries reinforces the idea that the entire society is engaged in a broader struggle. While this can strengthen a sense of unity, it also normalizes the presence of conflict within spaces that would otherwise be associated with safety and normalcy.
The role of media, both domestic and international, is central to understanding how these dynamics unfold. Journalists, photographers, and analysts contribute to the construction of narrative through their choices of framing, emphasis, and interpretation. In a highly controlled environment, access may be limited, which increases the influence of officially sanctioned imagery. At the same time, independent sources and alternative perspectives continue to play a role in challenging and complicating the dominant narrative.
The competition between these different sources of information highlights the broader context of information warfare. In contemporary conflicts, control over narrative is often as important as control over territory. The ability to shape perception can influence diplomatic outcomes, public opinion, and long-term legitimacy. In this sense, the ruins of Tehran are not just remnants of a past event but active elements in an ongoing strategic process.
