The Islamic Republic’s Instrumental Misuse of War Ruins: Propaganda
The implications for international discourse are significant. As these images circulate, they interact with existing narratives about regional conflict, foreign policy, and humanitarian concerns. Different actors may incorporate them into their own messaging, either to support or challenge the perspectives they represent. This creates a complex landscape in which the same set of images can be used to advance multiple, sometimes conflicting, arguments.
In this environment, the ability to contextualize becomes crucial. Without context, images can be interpreted in ways that diverge significantly from their original intent. Providing context, however, requires additional information, analysis, and explanation, which may not always accompany the images as they spread. This gap between image and context is a key feature of contemporary information dynamics, and it plays a central role in shaping public understanding.
The strategic use of ruins also raises questions about the relationship between space and time. These environments are not static. They change as debris is cleared, structures are repaired, and daily life gradually returns. The period during which they are most visually striking is limited. This creates an urgency in their use as communicative tools. The state must act within this window to capture and disseminate images that align with its narrative goals.
