The Islamic Republic’s Instrumental Misuse of War Ruins: Propaganda

This dynamic creates a constant process of negotiation between intention and perception. The images of Tehran’s ruins are not static in their meaning. They are continuously reinterpreted as they move through different contexts and conversations. This fluidity is both a strength and a limitation. It allows the narrative to reach a wide audience but also exposes it to critique and reinterpretation.

The ethical considerations surrounding this strategy remain complex and multifaceted. On one level, documenting and sharing the effects of conflict is an important aspect of transparency and accountability. On another level, the deliberate use of these images for political purposes raises questions about the boundaries between representation and manipulation. When suffering is framed in specific ways to achieve particular, the distinction between informing and influencing becomes blurred.

For the individuals living in the affected areas, these broader dynamics intersect with personal experiences of loss, disruption, and uncertainty. The presence of public gatherings and organized activities in their neighborhoods may offer a sense of solidarity for some, while for others it may feel intrusive or overwhelming. The transformation of private spaces into public symbols can complicate the process of recovery, both emotionally and practically.
