The Islamic Republic’s Instrumental Misuse of War Ruins: Propaganda

In this context, the effectiveness of the strategy depends not only on the content of the images but also on the networks through which they spread. Social media platforms, news organizations, and online communities all play a role in amplifying or challenging the narrative. The speed at which information travels means that initial impressions can have lasting effects, even if later analysis provides additional context. This makes the timing of image release and dissemination particularly important.

The concept of timing extends beyond immediate media cycles. It also influences how long the ruins remain part of the public narrative. As long as the physical damage is visible and accessible, it can continue to serve as a reference point for ongoing messaging. Once reconstruction begins in earnest, the visual impact of the destruction diminishes, and the narrative must adapt. This creates a window of opportunity during which the ruins are most effective as communicative tools.

The decision of when and how to transition from visible destruction to reconstruction is therefore not purely practical. It is also strategic. Rebuilding too quickly may reduce the emotional impact of the images, while delaying reconstruction may have negative consequences for residents and infrastructure. Balancing these considerations requires careful planning and reflects the broader tension between immediate needs and long-term narrative goals.
