What Is the Basij?
The Basij Resistance Force, formally known as the Basij Organization for the Oppressed, is a paramilitary and social mobilization organization affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
It was established after the Iranian Revolution and developed into a nationwide network of volunteers and affiliated organizations.
The Basij has historically been involved in several different areas, including:
- Military mobilization
- Internal security
- Ideological activities
- Youth programs
- Religious and cultural programs
- Neighborhood organization
- Social services
- Emergency assistance
- Political mobilization
- Support for government policies
The organization has also played a significant role during periods of political unrest.
