Hossein Taeb: Who Is New Basij Commander? IRGC Intelligence Role, Sanctions and Political Influence

Hossein Taeb Appointed as New Basij Commander

The latest appointment represents a major development in Taeb’s career.

According to the information provided in the recent report, Iran’s leadership announced a series of changes involving senior military and security commanders. Among the appointments was Hossein Taeb’s return to the leadership of the Basij Organization for the Oppressed.

The decree reportedly followed the death of former Basij commander Gholamreza Soleimani.

In the appointment order, Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei cited Taeb’s experience, competence, and commitment as reasons for his selection and referred to a proposal from the commander-in-chief of the IRGC.

The appointment gives Taeb responsibility for one of Iran’s most extensive nationwide mobilization organizations.

The Basij is not simply a conventional military force. It is a broad social and ideological organization with networks extending into neighborhoods, universities, schools, religious institutions, workplaces, and other parts of Iranian society.

For that reason, the appointment of a former IRGC intelligence chief to lead the Basij has attracted considerable attention.
