Asghar Farhadi, Hollywood and the Politics of Cinema
Why Farhadi Avoids Direct Political Cinema
Farhadi has suggested that directly explaining political issues can weaken the cinematic experience.
His preferred method is more indirect.
Rather than telling audiences what to think, he creates situations in which viewers must interpret the characters’ actions.
This approach is particularly visible in A Separation.
The film does not simply tell viewers which character is right.
Instead, it constantly changes the viewer’s understanding of the situation.
New information changes the moral balance.
A character who initially appears dishonest may later appear understandable.
Someone who initially seems sympathetic may subsequently make a questionable decision.
This ambiguity is central to Farhadi’s filmmaking.
