Abbas Araghchi arrived in New York in September 2026 to lead Iran’s diplomatic delegation to the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

His trip took place against the backdrop of an exceptionally serious confrontation between Iran and the United States. International coverage described the UN gathering as taking place while Iran remained involved in a major conflict with Washington and amid continuing instability across the Middle East.

Araghchi’s presence was therefore not primarily ceremonial.

The Iranian foreign minister was involved in diplomatic activity surrounding the UN gathering, including contacts relating to the possibility of negotiations with the United States.

According to reports, American and Iranian representatives held several hours of discussions in New York. President Donald Trump said that representatives of the two sides had held a three-hour meeting, while other accounts described the discussions as mediated contacts involving U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian representatives.

Araghchi subsequently remained heavily involved in diplomacy surrounding the UN General Assembly.

Reuters reported that Iran was proposing conditions under which the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened and negotiations could resume.

By September 25, further reports said Araghchi had outlined a proposal involving the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and renewed nuclear negotiations under specific conditions.

This context matters because photographs of Araghchi in New York appeared during a period in which virtually every public appearance by the Iranian delegation had political significance.
