War Anniversary 2025 in Tehran: Commemorating Sacrifice, Regional Impact, and Future Outlook
The War’s End and Its Aftermath
The Ceasefire and UNSC Resolution 598
By 1987–1988, both sides were exhausted. The economic toll, human casualties, and international pressure led to renewed peace efforts. Negotiations culminated in the United Nations Security Council Resolution 598, adopted in July 1987, which called for an immediate ceasefire.
Despite initial delays and continued skirmishes, a formal ceasefire was agreed upon on August 20, 1988. The Iran-Iraq War officially ended in early 1988, though some hostilities persisted for months afterward.
Human and Material Losses
The war exacted an enormous toll:
- Casualties: Estimated death tolls range from 500,000 to over a million, including both military personnel and civilians.
- Injuries and Displacements: Millions were wounded or disabled, and millions more were displaced from their homes.
- Economic Devastation: Iran and Iraq’s economies were shattered, infrastructure destroyed, and national industries crippled.
