The Global Response to Protests: A 2026 Perspective

Gender Equality Issues

The grievances of women in Iran are deeply rooted in a patriarchal legal system that enforces discriminatory laws and social norms. Women face numerous legal restrictions, including limitations on their ability to travel, work, and participate fully in society. For instance, the legal age for marriage is significantly lower for girls than for boys, and women require permission from a male guardian to obtain a passport.

Social norms further exacerbate these inequalities, as women are often subjected to harassment and violence for not adhering to strict dress codes or traditional roles. The protests have highlighted these issues, with women demanding not only political freedom but also gender equality. Slogans such as “Women, Life, Freedom” have resonated throughout the protests, emphasizing the interconnectedness of women’s rights and broader human rights issues.

The fight for gender equality in Iran is not just about legal reforms; it is also about changing societal attitudes. Many women are challenging the status quo, advocating for their rights in various spheres, including education, employment, and personal autonomy. The protests serve as a platform for these voices, creating a collective movement that seeks to dismantle the systemic barriers that have long oppressed women in Iran.
