U.S. Military Pressure on Iran
The United States has responded by imposing military and economic pressure on Iran.
According to U.S. military statements reported by multiple outlets, American forces destroyed five Iranian oil tankers after Iranian forces attempted to attack a U.S. Navy warship with ballistic missiles.
The vessels identified by U.S. authorities included the M/T Kaviz, M/T Charminar, M/T Horizon 1, M/T Riesco and M/T Derya.
The U.S. military said crews were directed to abandon the ships before they were struck and rendered inoperable.
The American rationale is that Iranian oil tankers are connected to networks that provide financial support to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and affiliated regional organizations.
From Washington’s perspective, targeting these vessels is therefore not simply a maritime operation.
It is part of a broader strategy to increase the economic cost of Iranian military activity.
For Tehran, however, attacks on Iranian oil shipping represent a direct assault on a critical component of the country’s economy.
That creates a cycle of retaliation.
Iran attacks or threatens American and commercial vessels.
The United States responds against Iranian military or economic assets.
Iran then threatens further retaliation.
And the cycle continues.
