A tanker may be politically insignificant to the people aboard it.

For a sailor, however, an attack can mean a life-threatening emergency.

Crews operating in conflict zones face difficult decisions about whether to enter a particular area, whether insurance coverage is adequate and whether evacuation or rescue services will be available.

As tensions increase, shipping companies may decide that certain routes are too dangerous.

That can produce delays and additional costs even when no further ships are attacked.
