Seyyed Hassan Khomeini Visits Seyyed Mahmoud Alavi: A Sign of Political and Religious Connections

Human Rights Violations and Controversies Under Seyyed Mahmoud Alavi’s Leadership

Suppression of Protest Movements

One of the most defining aspects of Alavi’s tenure as Iran’s Minister of Intelligence was his role in suppressing widespread protests that challenged the regime’s authority. The December 2017–January 2018 protests, which began as economic grievances over inflation, unemployment, and corruption, quickly morphed into anti-government demonstrations across dozens of Iranian cities.

The regime’s response was swift and brutal. Human rights organizations documented the use of live ammunition, mass arrests, and torture. Official figures estimate that at least 25 protesters were killed, although independent sources suggest the actual death toll could be significantly higher. Many detained protesters faced allegations of “security offenses” and were subjected to prolonged torture and coerced confessions.
