Why the Blue Jacket Fashion Show Matters
The importance of the Blue Jacket Fashion Show goes beyond the runway.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society’s 2026 estimates, approximately 333,830 new prostate cancer cases and 36,320 prostate cancer deaths are expected in the United States during 2026. The organization estimates that about one in eight men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime.
The disease also illustrates why public awareness matters.
Prostate cancer does not affect every man in exactly the same way. Age is a major risk factor, and risk is also influenced by family history, race, and inherited genetic factors.
The CDC states that all men are at risk of prostate cancer, with age being the most common risk factor. The agency also identifies African American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer as groups with higher risk.
The American Cancer Society similarly notes that prostate cancer risk is higher among Black men in the United States and Caribbean.
These disparities are an important part of the Blue Jacket Fashion Show’s mission.
Prostate cancer and racial disparities
The 2026 Los Angeles Blue Jacket event placed particular attention on prostate cancer disparities affecting Black men.
According to the CDC, Black and African American men are more likely than other men to develop prostate cancer, develop it at a younger age, have more advanced disease when it is found, and die from the disease.
The American Cancer Society’s September 2026 prostate cancer awareness statement reported that Black men are nearly 70 percent more likely than White men to be diagnosed with prostate cancer and approximately twice as likely to die from the disease.
This makes health equity a significant part of the conversation surrounding the Blue Jacket initiative.
Awareness is not simply about telling everyone the same message.
It is also about recognizing that some populations face different levels of risk and different barriers to timely diagnosis and treatment.
That is one reason the participation of celebrities, athletes, doctors, and community advocates can be significant. Public figures can bring visibility to issues that are otherwise discussed mainly in clinical environments.
