September 19 and 20: A Global Date for Iranian Demonstrations
According to the rally message circulated by organizers, September 19 and 20 are intended to become days of coordinated demonstrations among Iranians living outside Iran.
The organizers describe the campaign as extending from Tokyo to Vancouver, with demonstrations intended to connect Iranian communities across different continents.
The central message is one of remembrance, national solidarity and political freedom.
The date is particularly significant because September 2026 marks four years since the death of Mahsa Amini. Her name has become inseparable from the Woman, Life, Freedom movement, one of the most consequential waves of protest against the Islamic Republic in recent Iranian history.
The protests that began after Amini’s death rapidly developed beyond the original circumstances of her arrest. Demonstrators challenged compulsory hijab laws, state repression, political restrictions and the broader political structure of the Islamic Republic.
International demonstrations followed almost immediately.
Iranian communities in Germany, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Italy and other countries organized marches and rallies in support of protesters inside Iran. RFE/RL documented demonstrations in several countries following Amini’s death, while reporting that the movement became a major challenge to the Iranian authorities.
Four years later, the memory of Amini remains a central symbol for Iranian opposition movements abroad.
For many participants, the September 2026 rallies are therefore not simply political demonstrations. They are also commemorative events dedicated to people who died during protests and to political prisoners, activists and families affected by repression.
