His authority is challenged.
His daughter is planning to leave.
And his response to all of these pressures becomes progressively more authoritarian.
This makes the character disturbing precisely because his behavior emerges from recognizable human fears.
He fears losing his job.
He fears losing his house.
He fears losing his daughter.
And ultimately he fears losing control.
Instead of responding to those fears through communication, however, he responds through domination.
