“Janfada” Drill: Armed Volunteers, Basij Mobilization and the Unusual Appearance of Female Motorcyclists in Tehran

Why the motorcycle images attracted attention

Motorcycles have a particular cultural and political significance in Iran.

They are widely used as practical transportation, particularly in congested cities such as Tehran.

At the same time, motorcycle riding by women has been subject to longstanding legal and social controversy.

Women’s participation in public motorcycle demonstrations therefore carries a different visual meaning from ordinary civilian motorcycle use.

Within the Janfada exercise, the motorcycles also contribute to the military aesthetic of the event.

Instead of simply appearing as spectators, female motorcyclists were shown as participants in an organized formation.

That distinction explains why the photographs generated discussion on social media.
