Halloween Preparations in the capital: A Growing Trend Amidst Cultural Shifts

Personal Stories of Iranian Youth Celebrating Halloween

Young Iranians Embracing Halloween as Self-Expression

In Tehran, numerous young Iranians have taken Halloween as an opportunity to showcase their creativity and challenge societal norms. For many, dressing up and participating in Halloween festivities is a form of artistic expression and a way to connect with global youth culture.

Case Study: Sara’s Halloween Journey

Sara, a 22-year-old university student in Tehran, recounts how she started celebrating Halloween two years ago. “It’s a fun way to escape daily routines and express myself creatively. I love making my costumes and sharing my photos online. It’s also a way to connect with friends who share similar interests.”

Sara’s story is echoed by many Iranian youths who see Halloween as a harmless, enjoyable holiday. Despite societal and governmental pressures, they organize private parties, participate in online costume contests, and decorate their homes with spooky themes.

Underground Halloween Parties

Because public celebrations are often restricted, many Iranians host underground Halloween parties in private spaces. These events are often secretive, with invitations shared through social media or word of mouth. Participants enjoy dressing up in elaborate costumes, playing spooky music, and sharing Halloween treats.

One such event took place in an apartment in Tehran’s north district, where young people gathered to celebrate Halloween with themed games, pumpkin carving, and costume competitions. Attendees reported feeling a sense of freedom and community during these clandestine gatherings.
