Golshifteh Farahani at Marjane Satrapi Funeral in Paris: Artists Remember the Legacy of Persepolis Creator
Satrapi represented one of the strongest examples of this cultural exchange. Through her books and films, she introduced global audiences to personal aspects of Iranian society that were rarely seen in international media. Instead of presenting Iran only through political discussions, she focused on ordinary human experiences.
Her storytelling approach allowed audiences to understand history through the eyes of a young girl, a daughter, an immigrant, and an artist. This personal perspective was one of the reasons Persepolis became such a powerful cultural work.
The funeral also highlighted the close relationship between cinema and literature in Satrapi’s career. Although she first gained recognition as a graphic novelist, she later expanded into filmmaking, bringing her visual imagination to the screen.
Her animated film adaptation of Persepolis became one of the most celebrated animated films of the 21st century. It demonstrated that animation could address serious subjects and appeal to both adult and younger audiences. The film’s international success helped establish Satrapi as a filmmaker with a distinctive artistic identity.
