Golshifteh Farahani at Marjane Satrapi Funeral in Paris: Artists Remember the Legacy of Persepolis Creator

Satrapi’s artistic journey began in Iran, where she was born into a family connected to intellectual and political traditions. Her childhood experiences during a period of major change in Iranian history later became the foundation for her most famous work. After leaving Iran and continuing her studies in Europe, she developed a unique artistic voice that combined personal memory with historical reflection.

Her decision to tell her own story through comics helped change perceptions of the medium. Before Persepolis, many people viewed graphic novels primarily as entertainment. Satrapi showed that comics could also be serious literature capable of exploring trauma, history, philosophy, and social issues.

The success of Persepolis turned Satrapi into an international cultural figure. The animated adaptation, co-directed with Vincent Paronnaud, brought her story to an even wider audience. The film received major awards and nominations and was praised for its emotional depth, artistic style, and powerful message.

Throughout her career, Satrapi continued exploring different forms of storytelling. She worked as a filmmaker, illustrator, writer, and artist, always bringing a distinctive perspective shaped by her experiences between Iran and Europe.
