Gil-Mali Ritual: The Ancient Mud-Covering Tradition During Ashura Mourning for Karbala Martyrs

Why Do Lur People Practice Gil-Mali During Ashura?

The Lur people are one of Iran’s historic ethnic groups, mainly living in regions such as Lorestan, Khuzestan, Ilam, and parts of western Iran.

Lur communities have preserved many unique cultural traditions, including music, clothing styles, storytelling, and religious ceremonies. The Gil-mali ritual is considered one of the most recognizable Lur mourning customs during Ashura.

For many Lur families, participating in Gil-mali is an inherited tradition passed from generation to generation. Children often learn the meaning of the ritual from older relatives, ensuring that the practice remains connected to community identity.

The ceremony is not simply a performance for observers. For participants, it is an emotional act of remembrance and a way of expressing loyalty to the values represented by Imam Hussein.
