Funeral in Tehran for Ali Larijani and Sailors Killed in U.S.-Israel Attack

Provincial Mourners and “Lovers of the Nation”

Beyond the of Tehran, thousands traveled from Iran’s provinces—Isfahan, Mashhad, Shiraz, and smaller rural communities—to attend the funeral. Many described themselves not as political participants, but as “lovers of the nation”—ordinary citizens compelled by grief, patriotism, and a sense of historical moment.

Men, women, and children arrived in buses overnight, carrying banners, flowers, and handwritten messages. Some clutched photographs of the fallen sailors from the IRIS Dena, while others held images of Ali Larijani and Gholam Reza Soleimani.

For many, attendance was deeply personal.

“We didn’t come for politics,” said one attendee from a provincial town. “We came because they died for Iran.”

This blending of personal grief with national identity is a defining feature of such large-scale funerals in Iran—where mourning becomes both emotional expression and civic participation.
