Funeral in Tehran for Ali Larijani and Sailors Killed in U.S.-Israel Attack

Rituals of Mourning and Martyrdom

Iran’s funeral traditions—especially for figures deemed martyrs—are steeped in religious symbolism. Clerics recited prayers, and mourners performed rhythmic chest-beating rituals known as latmiyah, echoing centuries-old Shiite mourning practices.

The coffins, draped in the national flag, were carried through dense crowds. At moments, waves of people surged forward to touch the caskets, a gesture symbolizing respect and spiritual connection.

The concept of martyrdom plays a central role. In Iranian political culture, those killed in conflict—especially against foreign adversaries—are often framed as shohada (martyrs), elevating their deaths into a broader narrative of sacrifice and resistance.

For the 84 sailors of the IRIS Dena, this framing is especially powerful. Lost at sea, far from home, they are now woven into the national story as defenders of sovereignty.
