Iran possesses some of the world’s largest hydrocarbon reserves, but sanctions have significantly complicated its ability to sell oil openly and access international financial systems.

When oil exports are constrained, access to foreign currency can become more difficult.

This creates a direct relationship between sanctions, oil exports and the exchange rate.

The more difficult it becomes for Iran to generate and repatriate foreign currency, the greater the pressure can become on the domestic currency.
