Free Market Dollar Rate Hits Record High: Dollar Reaches 200,000 Toman as Economic Pressure Deepens in 2026

New U.S. Economic Pressure on Iran

On August 24, Washington intensified its economic campaign against Tehran.

Reuters reported that the United States announced additional sanctions targeting individuals, companies and vessels associated with Iran while threatening broader secondary sanctions against countries that continue certain forms of economic cooperation with Tehran.

The measures are intended to make it harder for Iran to access international financial channels and generate revenue.

The strategy represents an escalation of economic pressure at a moment when Iran’s currency is already under severe strain.

The central objective of sanctions is to restrict the resources available to the Iranian government.

But sanctions can also have indirect effects on ordinary consumers.

When foreign currency becomes more difficult to obtain, import costs rise.

When trade becomes more complicated, shipping and insurance costs can increase.

When companies face greater uncertainty, investment can decline.

When investment declines, economic growth can weaken.

The challenge for policymakers is therefore extremely complex.
