Daily Life in Tehran Amidst Turmoil and Diplomatic Resumption: The Aftermath of January in 2026

The Role of Proxy Conflicts and Non-State Actors

Iran’s support for various non-state actors across the Middle East—such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Assad’s regime in Syria, and Houthis in Yemen—continued to influence regional stability. These alliances, formed over decades, complicated diplomatic efforts and often led to proxy conflicts that spilled over into neighboring countries.
The recent internal upheaval in Iran raised questions about the future of these alliances. Some regional actors expressed concern that internal instability could weaken Iran’s ability to project power, while others speculated that it might embolden their own regional ambitions.

The Future of Reform and Civil Society Movements

Despite repression, Iranian civil society and reformist movements persisted underground, advocating for change through education, art, and digital activism. Youth-led initiatives, often coordinated via encrypted messaging apps, aimed to build a more inclusive and transparent political landscape.
International support, though limited due to geopolitical sensitivities, played a role in sustaining these movements. Exiled Iranian activists continued to raise awareness globally, urging governments and international bodies to hold the regime accountable for human rights violations.
