Who Is Azadeh Akhlaqi?
Azadeh Akhlaqi is an Iranian photographer, visual artist, and filmmaker known internationally for her staged historical photography. Her best-known project, “According to an Eyewitness,” reconstructs the deaths of influential Iranian cultural, political, intellectual, and social figures through meticulously produced photographs.
Akhlaqi’s artistic approach is distinctive because she combines the visual language of cinema with the investigative methods of historical research. Her photographs often look like frames taken from a historical film, but the scenes are carefully reconstructed rather than directly photographed at the moment the events occurred.
This distinction is central to understanding her work.
A traditional documentary photographer might photograph a political demonstration, a historical location, or an individual person in real time. Akhlaqi instead asks a different question: What can photography do when the original image of a historical event does not exist?
Her response is reconstruction.
She researches an event and attempts to reconstruct the circumstances surrounding it. The setting, furniture, clothing, body positions, lighting, objects, architecture, and expressions are considered as components of a visual narrative.
The resulting photographs do not claim to be original documentary photographs. Rather, they make visible an imagined reconstruction based on historical evidence.
This approach has made Azadeh Akhlaqi photography an important subject in discussions about contemporary Iranian art, staged photography, historical memory, visual testimony, and the relationship between photography and truth.
