A perfectly circular opening formed above central Tehran.
It was impossible to determine how high it was.
The edges appeared to shimmer between black, red and violet.
The clouds around it moved in the wrong direction.
Birds scattered.
Cars stopped.
The masked performers slowly backed away from the street.
A woman driving past the event looked through her windshield and saw the enormous circle above the city.
She stepped on the brakes.
Behind her, several vehicles stopped.
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Then something came through the portal.
It was enormous.
Its silhouette resembled a combination of machine, animal and humanoid.
Metallic structures covered its body.
Long limbs extended downward.
Its head contained a single bright light.
It remained suspended above the city.
People began running.
The promotional event became a stampede.
Parents grabbed children.
Shop employees pulled people inside.
The performers removed their masks.
Their costumes suddenly looked completely different.
What had seemed like entertainment a few minutes earlier now looked like preparation.
