Apocalyptic Forces Invade Central Tehran: A Fictional Gaming-World Scenario
A City Searching for an Explanation
In real life, Tehran is one of the world’s largest and most densely populated capitals, with a complex mixture of historic neighborhoods, commercial districts, major roads and modern infrastructure.
In the fictional story, that complexity becomes a major part of the survival challenge.
There is no single battlefield.
The entire city becomes a maze.
People move through side streets.
Families search for relatives.
Public transportation stops.
Mobile networks become unreliable.
Rumors spread faster than verified information.
Some people believe the invasion is a military attack.
Others believe it is an elaborate technological experiment.
Some believe that the creatures have emerged from another dimension.
And a small group believes the strangest explanation of all:
that Tehran has somehow become part of a video game.
The idea initially sounds ridiculous.
Then people begin noticing something disturbing.
The creatures behave according to rules.
They do not attack randomly.
They move toward specific locations.
They react to particular sounds.
And every time one of them is defeated, another appears.
It is as though somebody—or something—is controlling the city like a giant game board.
The Gaming Store Becomes a Command Center
The small video game-themed store becomes an unlikely headquarters.
Its computers are turned on.
Large television screens display maps of Tehran.
Customers and employees gather around them.
A teenager notices something that nobody else has seen.
The creatures appear to be following routes.
Their movements resemble characters controlled by artificial intelligence.
He begins recording their positions.
Another person notices that the creatures avoid certain buildings.
Soon the store’s gaming displays are being used for something completely different.
Instead of showing games, they display maps.
Instead of selling accessories, employees distribute batteries, flashlights and emergency supplies.
The store becomes a meeting point.
The fantasy world that had attracted customers that afternoon now provides the vocabulary people use to understand the disaster.
Someone calls the creatures “bosses.”
