Hasan Yousefi Eshkevari: The Iranian Cleric, Researcher, and Reformist

Chapter 3: Shifting Perspectives

As we delve into the evolution of Eshkevari’s beliefs and viewpoints, we’ll explore the factors that led to his transformation from a supporter of the revolution to a critic of the Iranian theocracy.

3.1 Controversial Statements

Over time, Hasan Yousefi Eshkevari’s views began to evolve. He became increasingly critical of the direction in which the Iranian theocracy was heading. His public statements, including those critical of government officials, sparked controversy and raised questions about his stance on the revolution and theocracy.

3.2 Arrest and Trial

Eshkevari’s outspoken criticism did not go unnoticed by the authorities. In 2000, he was arrested after returning from the ‘Iran After the Elections’ Conference held in Berlin. His trial, held behind closed doors, included a range of charges, including acting against national security, defaming government officials in articles, starting a campaign against the system, and denying and insulting the holy religion of Islam. He was also permanently defrocked as a cleric.
