Golriz Ghahraman: The First Refugee MP and Advocate for Human Rights

Championing Human Rights and Legal Practice:

Ghahraman’s professional journey encompassed legal practice in New Zealand, where she worked as a junior barrister specializing in criminal defense. Advocating for human rights and defending the vulnerable, she found her legal career deeply fulfilling. Later, she extended her reach to the international stage, working for the United Nations as part of both defense and prosecution teams on tribunals in Rwanda, Cambodia, and The Hague. Despite controversies surrounding her work on the defense teams of accused and convicted war criminals, Ghahraman has maintained transparency in her actions.

Returning to New Zealand and Political Career:

In 2012, Golriz Ghahraman returned to New Zealand and resumed her legal practice as a barrister, focusing on human rights law and criminal defense. Her determination to uphold justice led her to appear before the Supreme Court of New Zealand, where her work contributed to the police overhauling their rules regarding undercover operations.
