Golriz Ghahraman, born in 1981 in Iran, is a remarkable New Zealand politician, Member of Parliament (MP), and author. Her life’s journey has been a testament to resilience, as she overcame adversity and went on to become the first refugee to be elected to New Zealand’s Parliament. Representing the Green Party, Ghahraman has made her mark as a fierce advocate for human rights and social justice.

Early Life and Journey to New Zealand:

Golriz was born in Mashhad, Iran’s second-largest city, to parents with diverse backgrounds; her father was Shia, while her mother was a Kurdish Sunni. Despite their differing religious affiliations, her parents were not religious themselves. In 1990, following the Iran–Iraq War, nine-year-old Golriz and her family left Iran, seeking refuge. Their journey led them to Malaysia, where they eventually secured flights to Fiji, with a stopover in Auckland. Upon arrival, they sought political asylum, and New Zealand welcomed them as refugees. Settling in Auckland, Golriz’s parents ventured into new business ventures and chose not to pursue their previous professions.
