Mojtaba Khamenei: The Potential Successor to Iran’s Supreme Leadership

Introduction

The Iranian Shia Islamic theologian, Mojtaba Khamenei, was born on September 8, 1969, and is the son of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei. His early life consisted of religious studies under the tutelage of leading figures such as his father and Ayatollah Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi. He then went to Qom, where he furthered his religious education under the guidance of knowledgeable clerics like Mohammad-Taqi Mesbah-Yazdi and Ayatollah Lotfollah Safi Golpaygani.

These activities have been linked to Mojtaba, particularly his association with former Iranian President Ahmadinejad. In the wake of Ahmadinejad’s electoral victories in 2005 and 2009, accompanied by subsequent protest crackdowns, it is believed that Mr. Khamenei played a very significant role in these events. Others question Mojtaba’s theological credentials and suitability for the role, while some believe he holds significant sway over his father and could potentially be the successor.

Some political groups do not accept the allegations that Mojtaba is a man who controls huge amounts of money in various countries around the world. He is married to Zahra Haddad-Adel, who has children with him.
