The Sacred of Hand-Kissing in Islamic Culture: A Respectful Gesture at Kazem Siddiqi’s Memorial Ceremony
Chapter 7: Deepening the Understanding of Respect and Reverence in Islam
The Foundations of Respect in Islamic Teachings
Respect in Islam is not merely a social custom but a spiritual obligation rooted in divine commandments and prophetic traditions. The Qur’an emphasizes humility and respect as essential virtues:
- “Indeed, those who are humble for the sake of Allah — the Most High — will be exalted.” (Qur’an 25:63)
- “And lower your wing to the believers who follow you.” (Qur’an 26:215)
Similarly, numerous Hadiths highlight the importance of respecting elders, teachers, and community leaders:
- The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “He who does not show mercy to people, Allah will not show mercy to him.” (Sahih Muslim)
- “Respect your elders and love your young ones.” (Sunan Abu Dawood)
These teachings underscore that respect is a manifestation of faith and a way to attain divine favor.
Respect and Reverence Toward Religious Scholars and Leaders
In Islamic tradition, scholars and religious leaders, such as Imams, Sheikhs, and Ulema, are regarded as custodians of knowledge and guides on the spiritual path. Their role is central in preserving and transmitting Islamic teachings.
The act of hand-kissing or greeting with humility towards these figures is an expression of gratitude for their service, obedience to divine guidance, and recognition of their spiritual authority. It reflects the believer’s acknowledgment of the spiritual hierarchy established by Islamic teachings.
